Body, Mind, Spirit and The Needs of Life--
Body, Mind and Spirit
Body, mind and soul affect and are affected by each other and our overall physical health depends on healthy conditions in other aspects of our being. All areas must be considered for any program of wellness.
Stress -- In Pandemic Proportions
Many people now say that their current stress levels feel like they’ve never been higher. 68% percent of those polled say right now is the most stressed they’ve ever been in their entire life. Two out of three Americans (67 percent) say they’re so stressed right now that it’s causing them to be less productive at work. About 55% said they experienced stress during “a lot of the day”, and about 45% said they had felt “a lot”of worry during the day. Plus, the average American spends $960 a year directly on trying to feel less stressed.
Nearly 70% of those surveyed said that being stressed, they tend to turn to “unhealthy” coping mechanisms. That includes overeating, bad food or life choices, smoking, drug use, etc. So that adds to the already dangerous effect of stress on the body. Being under constant pressure is abnormal and secretes hormones. These are body- generated drugs secreted in excess. As with any drug that’s overdone, they harm the body.
Dangers of Stress
Statistics support the claim that stress kills.
Add to that the fact that nearly 70% of those surveyed said that being stressed, they tend to turn to “unhealthy” coping mechanisms. That includes overeating, bad food and/or life choices, smoking, drug use, etc.
Based on a morbidity study, individuals who experience moderate or high levels of regular stress have a notably higher mortality rate compared to those who don’t. Research shows in that people under constant stress have a 50% higher mortality rate. Being under constant pressure is abnormal and secretes hormones. These are body- generated drugs being secreted in excess. And as with any drug that’s overdone, they harm the body.
Fatigue is one of the most prevalent of stress symptoms. 51% of adults experience fatigue, 44% experience headaches, and 30% have tension in their muscles due to stress.

Magnets for Good or Ill
The addict mentality is built into the human condition. We are as "bondslaves of desire." Yet that can work in our favor-- When we eat and act in what is good for us, we crave for more of it! A well body craves exercise and rest-- and responds to the meeting of that need with more healthy desires! A sick body may crave only rest, and sometimes tries to fill its longing with unhealthy food. The sad thing is, the more of that it gets, the more it often craves! How strange it is, but too often true indeed! |
